About 3 miles from the park on Hwy 635, the Arecibo Observatory -- the largest radio dish-telescope in the world--makes a great side trip. The 20-acre, 636 metric ton dish, is 900 feet in diameter and 150 feet deep, and sits in a gigantic sinkhole depression between adjoining hills. It is used by Cornell University scientists to study pulsars and quasars, and is part of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) network. Tours are held Tuesday - Friday at 2:00 pm (tel 787-878-2612). Aventuras Tierra Adentro, 272-B Ave. Piñero, University Gardens, Rio Piedras, PR 00927, tel 787-766-0470, fax 787-754-7543.
