Farley Lourens

Visual artist Hubert 'Yubi' Kirindongo

On May 1, 2004, the official opening of the 16th solo exposition, of Curaçao artist Hubert ‘Yubi’ Kirindongo took place at Kas di Alma Blou in Otrabanda. Yubi, as he’s called by family and friends, participated in a total 41 exhibitions in different countries around the globe.

Governor of the Netherlands Antilles Mr. F. Goedgedrag

A group of art lovers was present at the exposition, which he entitled: Traha Arte (Make Art), to admire Yubi’s latest creations.

Host Poppy Verboom, held a brief opening and greeted the guests. Shortly hereafter, the director of Kas di Kultura (House of Culture), Dr. Rene Rosalia, held a speech in which he emphasized on the fact that it was Labor Day and very few artists on the island managed to make a living of art. One of the few exceptions is Yubi because of his decisiveness, dedication and energy. As a special attraction, culturist Elia Isenia interpreted a tune slaves sung during an uprising centuries back on the island because they were forced to work without even a meal a day.

Yubi Kirindongo specializes in creating work of art out of waste material he recycles. He is famous for an art form he developed in which he creates beautiful art pieces out of chrome car bumpers. Besides this special art form, Yubi uses all kinds of material such as disposed tires, pieces of concrete, tiles, coral, computer chips, polyester, leaves, iron, aluminum and wood to create his work.
For this exposition, Yubi mainly used pieces of driftwood, which he artistically puzzled together as a painting in self-made picture frames of different material. On some of the art pieces, he only used driftwood and on others, he used it as a backdrop, completed with pieces of iron and thin to create colorful landscapes. Yubi does not need expensive material but instead uses his creativity, technical skills and artisanship to create something extraordinary out of the ordinary.

The exposition ‘Traha Arte’ will be at Kas di Alma Blou until May 22, but one can also visit Yubi’s house at Seru di Kandela, which is open to the public as a museum to admire and acquire some of his outstanding art work.
